Privacy policy

steelweight-calculator.com does not require an account and does not collect personal information. The calculators run in your browser; the sizes and lengths you enter are not sent anywhere.

Server logs

The site is served by Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes technical data such as IP addresses to deliver pages and protect the site from abuse. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.

Visit statistics

We count page views with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which does not use cookies, does not fingerprint visitors and does not track you across sites. It records things like the page visited, the referring site, the country and the browser type, in aggregate.

We also use Google Analytics 4 to see which pages and charts are useful. It records the pages you visit, the site you came from, your approximate location (country or city, from your IP address, which Google does not store), your device and browser type, and actions such as downloading or printing a PDF chart. We do not use Google Analytics for advertising, and Google signals (cross-device tracking) is turned off. See how Google uses information from sites that use its services.

Visitors from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland: Google Analytics runs in a cookieless mode for you (consent mode with analytics storage denied), so no analytics cookies are set on your device.

The embeddable calculator that other websites can add (/embed/) does not load Google Analytics.

Embedded videos

Some pages show a video from our YouTube channel. Until you press play, only a preview image is loaded from YouTube's image server. When you press play, the player loads from youtube-nocookie.com and YouTube's privacy policy applies.

Cookies

Outside the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, Google Analytics sets first-party cookies (_ga and _ga_<ID>) that keep a random identifier for up to two years, so that repeat visits are counted once. They contain no personal details. You can block them in your browser settings or with Google's opt-out add-on; the site works the same without them. The site sets no other cookies.

Browser extension

The Steel Weight Calculator extension for Chrome, Edge and Firefox collects no personal data and has no analytics. Your calculations, history, starred sections and settings are kept only in your browser's extension storage (chrome.storage.local) and are never sent to us.

• Once a day it downloads /ext/version.json from this site, and /ext/data-v1.json when the section tables changed. These requests carry no identifier; Cloudflare handles them like any page request (see Server logs).
• It reads page content only when you right-click a selection and choose the steel weight item: the selected text is looked up inside the extension, and a small result card is shown on that page. Nothing is sent anywhere.
• Links from the extension to this site carry utm_source=browser-extension, so the site's statistics can count visits that came from the extension.

Permissions: storage (settings and history), alarms (daily data check), contextMenus and activeTab + scripting (the right-click result card, only on the tab you clicked). It needs no access to any website: the data files on this site allow cross-origin downloads.
